Georgia & Greece choose songs
Friday, 20 February 2009 14:09
While most eyes in Europe were focused on last night's spectacular national final in Greece, another country was busy announcing the song that will be representing them.

Then all of a sudden the story of the night switched from performances to politics.

Georgia chose the group Stephane & 3G to perform the 1970s disco-style song "We Don't Wanna Put In". Seems fairly innocent enough, doesn't it?

However, it seems that the Georgian voters haven't forgotten the violent conflict between their country and Russia last autumn over the disputed territory of South Ossetia.

Many commentators have already suggested that the lyrics to the song are actually an attack on Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin ("Put In" = Putin, get it?). As Eurovision rules are quite strict in not permitting any political element to the tunes, will Georgia's entry have to modify its lyrics, or perhaps might it even be pulled from the contest? We'll keep you up-to-date with all the latest developments!

Back at the Greek national final, the voters were being asked to select the tune that would be performed by Sakis Rouvas, another Eurovision veteran (he previously finished 3rd in 2004 with the song "Shake It"). In the end, the winning tune was "This Is Our Night", a dance anthem that wouldn't seem out of place in a nightclub. But will it go down well with the international voters?

The UK's Jade also performed at the Greek national final, giving yet another storming performance of "My Time". Can she turn these high-profile public appearances into votes during the final in Moscow?
