Winner Jodie said she'd marry me on show, but she met a sporting star and went back to hotel room and when I dumped her but she tried to keep £8,000 ring I'd Do Anything winner Jodie Prenger was last night labelled a double-crossing love cheat by the fiance who proposed to her during the BBC1 talent show. Steve Greengrass told how he was heart-broken after he found out Jodie, 29, had kissed England international lacrosse player James Mearns, 21, on a boozy night out with girlfriends. Steve, 41, says Jodie - who will play Nancy in Andrew Lloyd Webber's latest West End production of Oliver! - tried to deny she had enjoyed a passionate snog with the sports star in his hotel room. But Steve, who bought an £8,000 engagement ring, decided he can no longer trust her and broke off their engagement last week after discovering there are PHOTOS of the pair kissing. Now the heartbroken engineer - seen by millions of viewers hugging former cabaret singer Jodie at the start of the show in March - is waiting for his Tiffany sparkler to be returned. Opening his heart to The People, Steve said: "She was on a hen night in her home-town Blackpool with her friends and she ended up at a hotel with a group of men who were there for the weekend. "I was in Blackpool too for a salsa convention and I was trying to meet up with her. "We hadn't been together for long but we were really into each other. It was the week before Valentine's Day, in February. "Then three weeks ago I heard that she had been in a hotel room and there were pictures of her in very compromising positions with this guy James "Jodie was worried that it would come out in the paper and was in floods of tears. "She said she didn't stay there and that her mum came and picked her up. "Alarm bells started ringing because her mum doesn't drive much so I called her mum and said she didn't pick her up. "I asked her time and time again if she had done anything with him and finally she admitted she went into the hotel room with him but she was really drunk and didn't remember much." According to Steve, Jodie tried to get her new mentor and theatre producer Sir Cameron McIntosh's team to try to convince him the incident happened after just one date. But he insists: "It wasn't after one time, we had been out three times and things were pretty intense. Everything happened so quickly between us and we had a weekend in London planned for the week after her night out so things were serious. "We were planning a life together in London. I was going to move from Northampton to be with her, I even got a job working in the city so we could be together. If she had admitted what she did then we could have worked through it but she didn't. Then I pieced everything together and realised what I was dealing with - and it wasn't nice." Once Steve had rumbled Jodie, he says her texts and phone calls immediately dried up. He was also contacted by lacrosse star Mearns through his brother's Facebook internet site. Steve said: "My brother Anthony gave me James's email and I got in touch. He told me that he wants me to know what happened, he feels bad because he didn't know Jodie had a boyfriend. "I don't blame him - he wasn't to know that Jodie was with me at the time." Steve says it became apparent that things were all but over for the pair when Jodie ignored a string of text messages from himwhile she dined at London's posh Ivy restaurant with Lloyd Webber, 60. He claims she later told him that she didn't have her phone with her - but the next day there were pictures of her clutching it in a newspaper. He said: "It might not seem like a big deal that she didn't reply to my texts but we were always on the phone, that was how our relationship was. "We would talk and text all of the time so when this changed it came as a shock and it was a real sign that things were over for us." Steve also claims he was frozen out by Jodie's parents Madeleine and Marty who run an old folk's home. He said: "I would travel down to the BBC studios with her parents every Saturday but on the day of the final they didn't come for me, instead I had to go on my own. "The day after the final her dad came and picked up her Mercedes SLK which was parked on my drive. Things were never the same after that." Steve began going out with Jodie in January and proposed on April 12 after Jodie survived eviction from the show. Steve got down on one knee with the £8,000 ring and a love poem in the backstage bar at the BBC's White City studios. He said: "She was over the moon. She screamed and ran round telling everyone our news. I felt so happy, we drank loads of champagne. Life seemed perfect." But he added: "Jodie wanted to be the main story in the show. She wanted to be more memorable than the rest of the girls." Now Jodie is poised for a glittering megabucks stage career without Steve. She beat off 11 other finalists to win the prestigious role in Oliver! which will begin in December and run indefinitely. Jodie will be joined by Rowan Atkinson, 52, who has the part of Fagin. Tickets went on sale in April and are already being sold for £200 a pair - twice their official price - on eBay. Meanwhile Steve is left with painful memories - and says he is still waiting for the ring to be returned. He said: "I am so hurt by what she did. I feel cheated, used and abused. What an idiot I have been. "I truly thought she was The One for me otherwise I wouldn't have proposed so quickly. "It has been like being on a big rollercoaster ride, one minute we were talking about our future and what we were going to do next and then the next thing I know, it's over." Last night a spokesman for Jodie confirmed she had split from Steve. He said: "Jodie is aware there are photos of her kissing James Mearns but she says this all took place back in February and, while she had met Steve then, she claims she wasn't in a proper relationship with him." Asked about Jodie's alleged failure to return the engagement ring, the spokesman said: "It was returned on Thursday." Source |
