Nancy winner defies her critics

Nancy winner Jodie Prenger has said she is determined to prove everyone wrong after landing the role in West End musical Oliver.

The 28-year-old from Blackpool divided judges on the BBC talent show I'd Do Anything including head judge Andrew Lloyd Webber.

But the actress took everyone by surprise when the public voted for her ahead of favourite Jessie Buckley.

"I'm going to get out there and prove them wrong," Jodie said.

Just before announcing the winner, host Graham Norton checked in with the judges to see who they wanted to play Nancy.

Divided opinion

Denise van Outen and John Barrowman both voted for Jodie but Lord Webber, Barry Humphries, and Cameron Mackintosh, all wanted 18 year-old Jessie from County Kerry.

Theatre producer Mackintosh, whose company is financing and producing the musical, even went as far to proclaim, "Jessie is Nancy."

When Jodie was announced as the winner even she didn't know why she got the public's backing.

"I'm just shocked they put up with me! Thank you!" she said.

"I still think I'm riding that wave, it's not stopped. I'm going to be really annoying for at least the next two weeks!"

Despite Lloyd Webber's initial objections, Jodie did praise her new boss and Oliver producer Mackintosh.

She told Newsbeat: "Do you know they were so lovely afterwards and they said they just had to say a name then, but they can't wait for me to be Nancy. And in a way that's brilliant, because it's given me that fire in my belly and Nancy has got that hasn't she."

Spotlight bite

Jodie is also not fussed that the final of I'd Do Anything pulled in seven million viewers compared to ITV rival Britain's Got Talent which scooped 14 million.

"It's I'd Do Anything all the way," she said. "Simon Cowell should be quaking in his boots when we enter the room."

The actress has already felt the bite of being in the spotlight with various comments on the show and in the press about her size.

Jodie did win TV diet programme The Biggest Loser a couple of years ago and is now reported to be a size 14.

"I'm just average. I don't know what all the hoo-ha is all about," she explained.

"They mentioned things about my fitness but while I was in the house (where all the contestants stayed) I was signed up to do the London marathon and I'd jog like 5 miles every other day, so I am physically fit."

Shaking pressure

Rehearsals for Oliver! start in October with the show opening in London's West End in January 2009.

And Jodie's already shaking off the pressure. "There's been pressure for 12 weeks, there's a live show on Saturday night, with see-through stairs and six inch heels, now that is what I call pressure!" she added.

"So no, I can't wait and this has been such a passion of mine, I'd start tomorrow if I could.

"I have wanted this for so many years and I ain't going to give it up now, I'm just going to put my all into it. It's not going to be a job and it's not going to be work, it's my passion so I'm just going to love every day of it.
