Jodie Prenger won the final of I'd Do Anything to land the role of Nancy in the West End production of Oliver!

As the result was announced live on BBC1 and the 28-year-old from Blackpool learned she had triumphed in the telephone vote she screamed and hugged Jessie Buckley, who came second.

She said: "All you guys, thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. I'm just so chuffed." The favourite won despite Andrew Lloyd Webber announcing he preferred 18-year-old Irish singer Jessie.

He said afterwards: "It was always going to be the people's choice." In the first part of the show the girls sang solo and then performed duets with the three boys chosen during the series to play Oliver in the musical.

After the first round of voting Samantha Barks was evicted from the final three. The 17-year-old from the Isle of Man said: "It's been the most amazing experience of my life. Thanks to everyone and the panel for making it so incredible."

Jodie and Jessie then went head to head and sang "As Long As He Needs Me" both dressed in red. Jodie then sang the Whitney Houston hit I Have Nothing and Jessie Ella Fitzgerald's The Man That Got Away.

After the telephone lines closed, the judges, Torchwood star John Barrowman, singer and presenter Denise Van Outen, musicals star Barry Humphries and musicals producer Cameron Macintosh revealed their preferences were split down the middle. Lloyd-Webber chose Jessie as his favourite.

Twelve Nancys started the BBC show, the third to select a musical star, following How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? and Any Dream Will Do.
