Having already sold to ABC in the US, as well as into Australia, Italy and Russia, the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing format is now set to sashay on to screens in Poland, Denmark and New Zealand.
Unveiled at the launch of Showcase, the BBC's own pre-MipTV programme market in Brighton, England, the Strictly Come Dancing deals have been inked with TVNZ, TVN in Poland, TV2 Denmark and VTM Belgium.
Due to debut on TVNZ’s flagship channel TV One as Dancing with the Stars later in 2005, the NZ sale follows the success of the format in Australia, where it launched on Seven in 2004 to audience peaks of 2.1m. Seven's second season recently premiered to a 37% audience share.
This spring will also see the format debut in Poland and Denmark, while Belgian commercial broadcaster follows in autumn, starring Flemish celebrities. The BBC is now calling the Strictly Come Dancing a worthy follow-up to BBC Entertainment's previous global format hits, Weakest Link and Dog Eat Dog.
“The reaction to the show from broadcasters and audiences around the world has been phenomenal and proves yet again the strength of the in-house format development team within BBC Entertainment,” said Colin Jarvis, BBC Worldwide’s director of programmes and operations.
He added that the Strictly Come Dancing format is expected to generate income of Ł20m over five years, with further sales due during this week's Showcase event.
The new sales follow deals in Italy, where Ballando con le Stelle (Dancing With the Stars) secured audience shares of over 30% for RAI Uno. The net has since ordered further episodes for its live Saturday night slot. RTR Russia has also bought the format, and a deal with ABC has been finalized but not announced.
