With all 43 competing Eurovision countries having their say, the voting went on for almost as long as the interval act seemed to. But we got there in the end.
And also in the end, it went the way everyone expected, as clear favourites Russia stormed to the top of the scoreboard of Eurovision 2008.
Baltic heart-throb Dima Bilan's song Believe bagged a massive 272 points in the final voting, not all of them from eastern Europe, giving Russia an absolutely decisive victory on final night in Belgrade.
Trailing second and third were the Ukraine's Ani Lorak and the only western hope near the top of the table, the perky pop of Greece's Kalomira.
Which left the UK and poor Andy Abraham, who delivered a barn-storming performance of Even If way back near the start of the evening, floundering jointly with Germany and Poland and a not disgraceful 14 points at the bottom of the board.
Our own Sir Terry Wogan was almost lost for words as the voting from the eastern nations held sway once again, and, in the dying moments of the night, our host was left musing on whether it was ever going to be worth western European countries competing at all.
What's indisputable, however, is that it was Russia's night. And that the contest continues to march eastward in more ways than one.
But heartfelt commiserations to Andy - you did us proud.
