They came, they performed but they didn't get a single point. We salute some of the brave Eurovision Song Contest hopefuls who sang for their countries but went home with nothing but nul points for their efforts. Jemini, UK 2003 Plucky Liverpudlian singing duo Chris Cromby and Gemma Abbey (pictured above) hold the dubious honour of being the only UK entrants in Eurovision history to not merit a single point in the contest. They claimed their off-key performance of Cry Baby was down to the fact that they couldn't hear their backing track on the night. But the rest of Europe heard all right, and wasn't impressed. Gunvor, Switzerland 1998 Berne-born singer and dancer Gunvor Guggisberg had been a favourite to win before the contest. But her diva-ish and tabloid-baiting behaviour in the run-up to the final in Birmingham brought shame to her countrymen and didn't exactly endear herself to the voting public either. Her song Lass Ihn got zero points as a result. Ovidijus Vyšniauskas, Lithuania 1994 Lithuanian musician and bad Scrabble hand Ovidijus made history as Lithuania's first Eurovision entrant in 1994. Sadly Marijampole City's favourite son also made history for another reason when his song, the lilting ballad Lopšine Mylimai (Sweetheart's Lullaby), failed to lull the voters and came in an unfortunate 25th out of 25 on the night. Kojo, Finland 1982 Helsinki rock singer Timo Kojo was determined to shake up Eurovision with his anti-war protest song Nuku Pommiin! (Ban the Bomb!) in 1982. Sadly the pacifist anthem proved to be about as popular as nuclear fallout, failing to ignite among the voters and coming in at last place. Jahn Teigen, Norway 1978 Eurovision's first - and one of it's most memorable - nul pointers, under the current scoring system at least, was Třnsberg singer-songwriter Jahn with Mil Etter Mil (Mile After Mile). Despite getting zero points the first time, Jahn enter the contest again in 1982 and 1983, as a duo with his future wife Anita Skorgan, notching up respectable 12th and 9th placings second and third time round. But Norway would get nul points again with Finn Kalvik in 1981. Ouch. Source |
