In a dramatic turn of events, injured Cristian de la Fuente came out on top on Monday's "Dancing with the Stars." But who comes out Tuesday in the latest elimination round? It looks dire for perky Marissa Jaret Winokur. But R&B singer Mario might not have the fan base to keep going. (ABC will offer two hours of "Dancing" on Tuesday; a judges' countdown show of greatest dances at 8, then the 100th episode celebration at 9 on WFTV-Channel 9.) On Monday's show, the dancers each performed two routines. In a bit of shrewd showmanship, producers saved Cristian for last each time. Could he meet the challenge? Yout bet. He adapted after injuring his arm last week. Partner Cheryl Burke delivered the choreography to keep Cristian from injuring or embarrassing himself. His first-round tango was a theatrical routine set to "Beat It." His second-round mambo offered good footwork, impressive twirls and even a lift at the end. Bruno Tonioli marveled, "The things you can do with one arm. ... It's magic." The show needed that injuection of excitement and mystery, because this has been Kristi Yamaguchi's season so far. A visit to the doctor's office, complete with X-ray, helped refute the speculation that Cristian might be faking his injury. As for the others ... Marissa brought a brassy exuberance to her first-round foxtrot, which was set to "New York, New York." Her second-round mambo was too prim. Mario's first-round waltz contained awkward footwork and an impressive lift. Len Goodman said that Mario's dancing usually reminded him of Britney Spears getting out of a car. Translation: Mario lacks sophistication -- and the studio audience gasped at Len's commentary. But Len said Mario overcame his Britney tendencies Monday night. Yet Mario was back to his rough ways on his second-round jive. Goodman faulted a lack of footwork. The usual front-runners -- Kristi and Jason Taylor -- received strong marks in the first round, then faced harsher-than-usual criticism in the second. Jason's tango featured wonderful kicks and an impressive lift. No surprise: A big man can deliver the lifts. A very long lift. But Jason seemed uncomfortable on his second-round samba. Carrie Ann Inaba knocked him for keeping his head down. Kristi Yamaguchi got in touch with her inner Ginger Rogers on a dynamic quick step. The judges loved it. The second time out, she brought great flair and energy to a samba. Inaba didn't care for it, but this was the night's most entertaining dance -- energetic, sassy, fun. Tonioli called her a bejeweled hummingbird. Kristi and Mark Ballas could have stepped out of a Carmen Miranda movie. Kristi wasn't at the top of the judges' leader board as Monday's show ended. But her dynamic performances reaffirmed that she is the standout celebrity in this bunch. Source |
