The semi-finals kick off
Written by Administrator
Sunday, 09 March 2008
Nerves were reeling and the ice was steaming before Leona Lewis launched the semi-finals of the biggest ice-travaganza ever seen on this earth.

The pop phenomenon opened Sunday's first show with a spine tingling performance of her Sport Relief single, Footprints in the Sand, for the first time as Olympic heroes Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean skated around her.

It was a moving display to whip the crowd into a frenzy ahead of the main event with the skaters forced to start the first 20 seconds of their routine alone before their partners skated out.

With a place in the final up for grabs, first out the starting gate was pop pin-up Gareth Gates who put in a rock and roll performance to Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer alongside rink partner Maria Filippov.

Afterwards, a lively Gareth revealed: "I just rocked out. It was really, really weird in the tunnel on my own."

Suzanne Shaw entered the ice next and she pulled off a cracking routine, including a snazzy float spin, with her partner Matt Evers to bounce back from the disappointment of her fourth place last week.

With Eternal Flame from the Bangles playing as her song, she enthused: "Oh my God! I went on really, really nervous then thought I'm going to enjoy this."

Underdog Zaraah Abrahams glided out onto the ice after Suzanne and staked a strong claim for a final place with partner Fred Palascak thanks to a classy performance to One from U2 and Mary J Blige.

Having executed several graceful moves, Zaraah claimed: "I can't believe it. It would mean that all our hard work would have paid off if we reach the final."

Finally, Chris Fountain took to the ice to try and make the showpiece final to Ricky Martin's Livin' La Vida Loca.

The soap star was a whirlwind of salsa alongside partner Frankie Poulteney and became the first person in the series to execute a flambo lift and helicopter lift during a dazzling routine.

An exhausted Chris declared: "I'm so, so pleased. I enjoyed that routine so much. Knowing it was the semi-final, we had to pull it out of the bag."
