We catch up with vocal coach, Carrie Grant, to find out what is going on behind-the-scenes as The One and Only...races towards the semi-final. Q: On Saturday, Ed Hintze, The One and Only…Elton John and Victoria Jones, The One and Only…Kylie Minogue left the show. Should they have been voted off? I agree with the voting this week but only because Ed and Victoria had made as much progress as they could in the time available. I don’t see them as the worst acts so much as ‘the least strong’ on the night. With longer to train, they could have raised their game. However, some of the others are just striding ahead. Q: Did you think that Joanna Berns, The One and Only..Cher would be in the sing-off? I don’t think anyone could believe that Joanna was in the bottom three. Everyone really admires her. However, it just proves that none of the acts are safe. Q: This week, the pressure is really on as it is The One and Only… semi-final. What will you be looking for on Saturday? I want to see flawless performances. The Tribute Acts should be technically perfect. They should have nailed everything from their visuals and facial mannerisms to the vocals and performances. But, for the grand final I want to see magical performances. Q: Word has it that we could be getting slightly hot under the collar watching some of the performances this week! What is this about? Simon Abbotts, The One and Only…Tom Jones is singing Sex Bomb this week and will be surrounded by gyrating dancers. He loves it but are the audience ready for this? I don’t know that they are! Also, Tony Lewis, The One and Only…Robbie Williams is out of the ballads and back to the showman routines. He’ll be revealing a lot more of himself this week and he can’t wait! Q: In previous weeks, you have talked about some of the acts having confidence issues. How have they been improving? Katy said something lovely about this in rehearsals. She said that it was like being in a house with a room that says ‘fear’ on the door. Every now and then she would open the door but run away. We have taken her by the hand and led her through the room and she has discovered that really the fear isn’t as difficult as she thought it was. Siam just has to learn to trust more. With confidence, she is capable of magical performances. However, she has to make sure that she has the mental attitude on the night. Another act who has come a long way is Anthony, The One and Only…Frank Sinatra. Anthony totally broke through the barrier on Saturday night. He found the inner performance. I’ve been watching back his first audition tape and he is so different now. He has learnt to act the songs and tell the story. Q: Will it be difficult to decide which acts deserve a place in the grand final? For me, it will be quite easy as I am looking at it from a technical angle. However, it isn’t down to me. It is down to the audience at home! Source |
