More than 11 million viewers... and I was one of them for reasons completely out of my control... watched Alesha Dixon twinkle toe her way to victory in the final of BBC1's Strictly Come Dancing. That's a nice ratings shaped Christmas present for Auntie eh?
The final results show averaged 11.4 million viewers from 9.25pm, peaking with 11.6 million just before 10pm, when Dixon, failed pop singer soon to revive her career thanks to the publicity of this show, beat EastEnders actor Matt Di Angelo in the final of the incredibly popular BBC1 series.
The main 5.50pm show averaged slightly fewer viewers - 10.9 million - but with a higher peak of 12.1 million at 7pm, according to unofficial overnight figures. All this tells us is that we were all mostly watching people dancing while the Beeb hooted and yelled with glee as it trounced ITV in the ratings war. How many people were on ITV? 2.9 million viewers... and that might have been people sleeping or ignoring whilst wrapping presents.
Proving it was no fluke, An Audience with Celine Dion, which had the unenviable task of going head to head with the Strictly Come Dancing results show, also averaged 2.9 million viewers. Although, in fairness, people on ITV may have tuned in on purpose just in case there was some kind of terrible accident to Celine. So who is the heavyweight champion of Christmas? So far, it's Auntie.
