Alesha wins by a smile

Alesha Dixon waltzed to victory in last night's Strictly Come Dancing final.

In the most nail-biting end in the BBC show's sixyear history, the former Mis-Teeq singer just beat Matt Di Angelo.

Alesha looked overwhelmed as the result was read out, crying and jumping up and down with dance partner Matthew Cutler.

As he handed her the winner's trophy, host Bruce Forsyth told her: "You could become the biggest female star in this country."

Matthew added: "You are a star in the making.

"You have worked so hard - you are just like a professional dancer, you are a sheer joy to dance with."

The 29-year-old singer, who has never had any formal training, battled on despite suffering a serious back injury earlier in the week and being plagued by panic attacks.

But hardworking Alesha managed to pull it off last night with five stunning performances.

Earlier in the show Alesha said: "Winning means more than anything to me."

Judge Arlene Phillips said of Alesha and Matt's waltz: "Triple A: Alesha Absolutely Amazing!"

And judge Len Goodman told her: "You are the best female contestant we have ever had on the show, even better than Jill Halfpenny."

But the competition was tight, with the judges full of praise for Matt's efforts.

After his salsa, judge Bruno Tonioli said: "That salsa shakes the winter blues away. You're flying high."

But the viewers voted for Alesha - by a narrow two points.

Runner-up Matt and his dance partner Flavia Cacace said they were "very pleased" to have made it to the final.

The Spice Girls performed during last night's show, singing their classic single 2 Become 1.

Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Day Special is on BBC1 at 8.30pm.
