How was it backstage on Saturday? Tess tells all

Hi everyone!

Well, we all approached Saturday with a mixture of excitement and intrepidation. It had been a heck of a week in the aftermath of Gabby's premature and shocking departure from the competition. It was gut-wrenching watching her watching the rest of the dancer's from the sidelines – her still raw disappointment was plain to see.

Kenny had a mission on Saturday night – he was dancing for Gabby. And oh, what a dance it was! He was like a warrior on the dance floor, and it was possibly the most macho Paso we've ever seen on Strictly! I was a big fan of the kilt – I'll take a gratuitous flash of male flesh wherever I can get it! Let's be honest, there's not enough of it on TV. So thank you Kenny, on a personal level. And just to prove that he was wearing pants, he kept flashing his (incredibly pert) bottom cheeks to us girls backstage!

Penny was keen to prove that they'd backed a winner, and the judges heaped lavish praise on her and Ian's Foxtrot. Well deserved it was too. Meanwhile Letitia continued to go from strength to strength with her Paso, and her obvious joy at doing so well was plain to see.

Alesha's Foxtrot was mesmerising. She was very emotional and close to tears after receiving praise from the judges, but wouldn't disclose why. She later told me that she was worried that she'd messed up the routine, and she couldn't believe that the judges didn't seem to notice.

Kelly, very surprisingly, failed to sizzle with her Paso. Determined to break with tradition and take on the role of cape twirler, i.e. the bull fighter, herself, she didn't get a lot of love from the judges. But Brendan managed to bite his tongue, which was a surprise. Has the 'bad boy' been tamed?

Whereas the new bad boy of Strictly – Anton, you know you are – hit a triumphant note with Kate. They were off the judges' bottom spot, and saved to dance another week. Kate went on to that dance floor with a whole new attitude and her head held high. They trained harder than any other couple last week, and on Saturday night it showed.

Gethin whipped the ladies, and Arlene in particular, into a bit of a frenzy with his foxy Foxtrot and that oh, so smooth wink at the end! And we saw Dom dance his last dance with the Paso Doble. Did he scare off his voters with that angry rant at the judges? Who knows. But he was looking forward to his first curry in a long time, which just goes to show that even our men get body conscious. You can't hide anything when it comes to lycra!

We'll be halfway through the competition this week, and the standard at this stage has never been so high, that's for sure. Everyone has to learn quickly to stay in the game, because it's sink or swim – you are only as good as your last dance. I think everyone is feeling the pressure, but they're still having a blast!
