The Sound of Music to Bow in Toronto

Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and David Ian's hit London production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's The Sound of Music will make its North American debut at Toronto's Princess of Wales Theatre in September 2008.

As in London, the production will directed by Jeremy Sams, with choreography by Arlene Phillips and design by Robert Jones.

As was also done in London, the role of Maria will be cast through a primetime television reality show. The program, modeled after the BBC's How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria, will be broadcast on the CBC. The remainder of the cast will be chosen from Canadian theatrical talent.

The Sound of Music premiered on Broadway in 1959 with Mary Martin in the lead role. The 1965 film version, with Julie Andrews as Maria, won five Academy Awards including Best Picture.
