He was a "Grease is the Word" loser, but now talented Wayne Smith is getting the last word with a role in a production of hit musical Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Wayne, of Norbreck Drive, Ashton, had returned to Preston to work as an estate agent after being booted off the finals of the ITV1 talent show in May. He decided to give singing and acting a rest and was working at Bairstow Eves in the city when he was asked to audition. And now he has scooped the role of The Pharaoh in a travelling production of popular musical Joseph. The show is being produced by Bill Kenwright, who was a judge on BBC's Any Dream Will Do – which was ironically the rival show to Grease is the Word. The version of Tim Rice's and Andrew Lloyd Webber's West End show will open in Bromley on August 20 and will also being making a stop off in Preston. Wayne, 26, said: "I was off work ill when I got an e-mail for the role. "It was massive surprise" Wayne had battled it out for the role of Danny in Grease, alongside Sandy wannabe Hayley Clarke, but they were the third final couple to lose out. The public finally voted for Susan McFadden, sister of Westlife's Brian, and Danny Bayne to play the pair. Wayne took some time out from rehearsals for Joseph in London to talk about speculation that the show had been a fix. He said: "I believe 100% it wasn't. But I think it was suggested that certain people would be a better choice." Wayne says when he finished the show he was disappointed that no offers came in: "I thought I was going to get signed up but nothing happened so I decided to give it up for a while. Wayne saw off the competition to land the second lead in Joseph which comes to his home city between November 5 and 10. Wayne, originally from Somerset, said: "I can't wait to come to Preston. It will be brilliant. And despite not making the Grease grade, Wayne said: "If I hadn't done it then I wouldn't have been considered to the Pharaoh." Source |
