BBC1 hit How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? will battle ITV’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! for this year’s Royal Television Society entertainment award. The musical theatre talent show, which saw Connie Fisher selected from ten hopefuls for the role of Maria in the latest West End version of The Sound of Music, is also up against Channel 4’s Friday Night Project. Fresh from her Academy Award success Helen Mirren has been nominated for the actress accolade for ITV1’s Prime Suspect, as has Julia Davis for BBC4’s Fear of Fanny and Susan Lynch for BBC2’s Soundproof. Philip Glenister, whose obnoxious seventies detective in BBC1’s Life on Mars has been hailed by critics, is up against Jim Broadbent, for Channel 4’s Longford, and Michael Sheen for his portrayal of Kenneth Williams in BBC4’s Fantabulosa, in the actor category. EastEnders has been left out of the running for the soap opera award, which this year will be fought out between Coronation Street, The Bill and Emmerdale. And in another snub Ricky Gervais does not feature in the nominations for comedy performer, while co-writer and partner Stephen Merchant does. He will face Catherine Tate and Kevin Bishop, best known for his work on Channel 4’s Star Stories.
