At 9.20 this evening, more than 20 million television addicts will face a dilemma. By then, the final of the X Factor will have been running for 10 minutes on ITV. But at 9.20 sharp, the final of Strictly Come Dancing is to begin on BBC1. This will be only the third time that these two titans of reality television have clashed. So should we switch over to BBC1, or stick with the X Factor? This is one of those questions that have divided the nation since the time of the Reformation: Papist or Prod? Cavalier or Roundhead? Boxers or briefs?

What the two programmes have in common is that they appeal to all our competitive instincts - and that, we wholeheartedly applaud. In both, the winners are lavished with glory, while the losers are mercilessly torn apart. In that same spirit of political incorrectness, we have no hesitation in backing one channel against the other. Go on, switch over. The Daily Telegraph is for Strictly Come Dancing.
