BBC Prime celebrates Africa

Wednesday, 27 April 2005
BBC Prime today announced that it will host a special celebration of Africa in July, with a week of programmes about African culture, history, arts, sport and documentary programming from 2 - 9 July 2005. BBC Prime’s Africa week forms part of AFRICA 05 - the biggest celebration of African culture ever organised in Britain, involving theatre, music, media, and the arts. As an official AFRICA 05 partner, the BBC is broadcasting a major season of Africa themed programming, and BBC Prime will extend this to international audiences.

In an unprecedented simulcast of schedules, BBC Prime will link up directly with the BBC’s leading national channel, BBC ONE, to bring viewers a taste of the African television line up throughout the week. In addition to these simulcasts, BBC Prime will schedule extra programmes about Africa every evening.

BBC Prime Head of Programming, David Weiland, said, “We are extremely excited to be part of this international Africa celebration. This is the first time BBC Prime will simulcast various parts of a season throughout an entire week, providing a live premiere for these programmes internationally.

“With a mix of live simulcast and scheduled Africa themed programming, BBC Prime will open a window for viewers onto this fantastically diverse, vibrant and exciting continent.”

Programmes in the BBC Prime Africa season will include:

The Elephant Diaries (simulcast live) - stripped across the week giving viewers an insight into the work of Kenya's elephant rehabilitation centres, capturing on film the dramatic and moving rescue of orphaned elephants and their reintroduction into the wild.

Nollywood – Nigeria's film business is booming: it's now the third largest in the world and releases around ten films a week. Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels' star, Nick Moran, is given three weeks to direct a Nigerian film for less than £10,000 - will he come away with a hit under his belt? His challenge is nothing out of the ordinary within the Nigerian film industry, where films made on the cheap regularly become huge hits. Nollywood chronicles the highs and lows of his film-making experience.

Strictly African Dancing (simulcast live) – Five British celebrities of African origin are each paired with an African dance troupe for intensive training before performing a traditional African dance.

African ER – Every year, a group of volunteers face the most emotionally challenging two weeks of their lives aboard a state-of-the-art hospital ship docked in Sierra Leone. The US-owned Anastasis travels the world bringing free medical help to those in need. British medics, engineers and deckhands are among those who give up their holiday to run its operating theatres. This documentary shadows them as they face the most demanding fortnight of their careers, and meets the African men, women and children who have walked for days in search of help.

Ground Force (simulcast live) – this gardening lifestyle programme brings a specially commissioned episode where the team join forces with one of Britain’s leading eco centres, the Eden Project, for one of their biggest challenges yet: building a 'Garden for Africa'.

Booty Queens – In the run up to fashion weeks in Cape Town and Johannesburg, Booty Queens follows the fortunes of a former Miss South Africa, a pregnant catwalk model, Miss Fats South Africa and an international model, to find out how beauty is defined in the new South Africa. Traditionally, fat was considered a sign of prosperity, but now voluptuousness is out and thin is in. It seems everyone wants to be a model but some young girls are starting to suffer from eating disorders in a bid to lose weight. Appearing in this documentary are famous faces as well as those working behind the scenes of the beauty industry.

Full details of programming and schedules for the BBC Prime Africa Season will be announced in mid May.
